Come meet the First Selectman candidates for the upcoming election and be a part of the conversation. This is a great opportunity to become informed about the candidates viewpoints on business in Westport.
Helen Garten, Democratic candidate for Westport First Selectman, has served eight years on the Board of Finance, two as Chair and four as Vice Chair. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, where she was an Editor of the Harvard Law Review, until recently she was a tenured law professor at Rutgers Law School, specializing in financial and corporate law and authoring two books and numerous articles on financial regulation. As the newly elected Chair of the Board of Finance during the recession, she successfully guided Westport through the economic crisis while keeping schools and town services well funded, taxes reasonable and our top bond rating intact. She has been a member of the Westport Revaluation Working Group, Saugatuck River Watershed Partnership, Norwalk Hospital Community Advisory Board and Westport Sunrise Rotary. She is a graduate of the Land Use Leadership Alliance Training Program, which trains community leaders in innovative land use strategies and dispute resolution techniques.
A Westport resident since 1989, Jim is married to Mary Ellen and they have one daughter, Samantha. Elected in 2005 to the Board of Education, Jim served twice as Interim Chairman and was Vice Chairman from 2007 to 2012. He was a member of three Teacher Contract Negotiation Teams and served on the Town Plan Implementation Committee. From 2009 through 2012, Jim skillfully balanced the lowest operating budget increases in over 10 years without diminishing the delivery of high quality education to our students. He has demonstrated a deep understanding of town boards and how to effectively lead complex issues and get results benefiting Westport.
Jim retired as a Senior Partner of Accenture, a leading global management consulting and computer technology services company. Jim's leadership was proven by solving complex problems in both the public and private sectors. Jim drove positive results through process and technology improvements, leading both small groups and teams of hundreds. Jim has a BS from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
